Humanscale Freedom Chair Review: What’s Special About Its Design?

The Humanscale Freedom task chair was developed by famed furniture designer Niels Diffrient. It looks elegant, modern, and uncomplicated in the modern workplace.

Aesthetics

If you look at the design, you’ll see that it’s simple but lovely. The structure is both flexible and robust.

This chair looks just as beautiful today as it did back in 1999 when it was initially introduced. The frame is simple with well-thought-out aluminum throughout.

Sturdy Frame & Materials

The Freedom task chair is a high-end chair constructed of high-quality materials.

Although it’s not precisely an office equipment that you’ll readily pick up, the robust graphite frame will not disappoint you.

Indeed, Humanscale has created a chair that is both pleasant and sturdy. There are also a few metal and plastic elements that are well-made and well finished.

The arms, like the frame, are composed of metal. There are graphite and polished metal frames. You can also choose from a variety of textiles, including vellum, leather, and sensuede.

Plastic is used to link the arm to the frame. Specifically, although there are a few plastic parts, such as the underside of the seat, the back of the headrest, and underneath the armrests.

However, one of the flaws from the plastic part is that armrests are quite fragile.

The seat is available in a variety of textile colors and can be composed of ordinary foam or gel.

Upholstery

Humanscale offers a variety of upholstery and base options to tailor the style of your new chair, depending on your budget

Humanscale Freedom chair review

You should have no trouble finding the ideal match for your area with 49 fabric upholstery options and 7 leather alternatives.

Height and Weight Capacity

The chair’s total weight capacity is roughly 300 pounds, making it strong and able to endure weight and posture fluctuations.

Furthermore, the height can be adjusted to fit anyone standing between five and six feet tall.

Wheels and Casters

The Freedom comes with four different caster options. Soft casters, locking casters, or glides. All types of caster are well-made and can glide easily across hard floors.

The hard caster is the most common option, and it’s designed for usage on low pile carpet. Soft casters are provided for use on hard surfaces such as hardwood or tile.

For individuals who want to keep the desk in one location, glides are offered. A lockable caster option is also available from Humanscale, which is ideally suited for drafting stools.

Humanscale Freedom Chair Review: How Can It Help You Improve Your Health?

Considering everything it has to offer, it’s evident that this chair was designed with one goal in mind: to make long hours at the office more pleasant.

Humanscale Freedom chair review

Sitting in one spot can be exhausting not just for the mind but also for the body. And Humanscale built this ergonomic chair to address some of the most common problems individuals have with low-quality office chairs.

The flattening of chair pads is a common issue among office workers.

Headrest

The Humanscale Freedom headrest is another useful feature of this Humanscale office chair.

The dynamic and flexible headrest supports your neck and head when you recline.

The headrest can move together with the weight-activated recline mechanism without the need to manually adjust the component when your head posture changes.

Backrest

The entire seat, including the headrest, back seat, and seat, is supported by its weight activated recline mechanism, allowing you to operate on your computer even when reclining!

This is almost virtually impossible with other office chairs as a reclined position forces you to stretch your arms and your groin forward.

Humanscale Freedom chair review

Indeed, you’ll certainly find yourself moving more during the day with the Humanscale Freedom’s weight-activated reclining function compared to other options.

Hence, this is also the most outstanding point that this Humanscale Freedom office chair review highly evaluates.

Besides, the Humanscale Freedom chair with headrest allows you to adjust positions during the day without having to pull a lever or press a button, and it does so while continuously supporting you.

This is useful because you will unconsciously shift your body positions to relieve stress.

There will be a time when you did never feel like my lower back was appropriately supported thanks to the pivoting lumbar.

Height Adjustable Arms

In this Humanscale Freedom chair review, besides the nice backrest, we want to show the height adjustable arms.

Humanscale Freedom chair review

The arms of this Humanscale office chair can be adjusted together up and down. It may be adjusted while you’re reclining for continuous support and relaxation.

You can adjust both armrests with one hand thanks to the design. After you’ve finished adjusting the arms, they’ll automatically lock in place.

The armrests of the chair are connected to the chair’s back by sturdy metal bracing. They are also coated in Duron arm padding, further add to the comfort. The pads strike an excellent blend of comfort and hardness.

Furthermore, the armrest is large enough to provide enough support for the forearm and elbows.

Humanscale Freedom Chair Review: Customer Reviews

Positive Review

Nick: “Well built and well designed”

“Great chair for long spans of sitting while completing work. The chair maintains your posture and then smoothly glides back when you feel inclined to recline. The headrest adjusts with the movement and provides comfortable support to the neck while reclining. The armrests also adjust with any reclining motion in the chair.

Overall, you just feel like you’re in a well-built (USA-made), and well designed chair. The fabric is durable, and the seat is firm but comfortable.

I don’t know what to say to the folks posting busted looking chairs, except to say that they are not maintaining the chairs adequately, have weight issues, or bought a used chair.”

Ken Jacobsen: “After eight years constant use, it’s worth every penny!!”

“I’ve used this chair, with the headrest (which it shouldn’t be purchased without) constantly for almost 8 years now and it’s absolutely the best. Plus Humanscale is a great company -one of the arms recently broke and the company paid to have it replaced, after 8 years!! I didn’t have to beg or cojole, either.

The cushioning isn’t as thick as some others for a very good reason -so your butt doesn’t get locked in deep cushioning, which may seem more comfortable in the short run but is really detrimental after a few hours work. The best thing is the way the headrest works -if I’m in need of a few minutes break, leaning back brings the headrest into position and wow, is it nice. And it’s perfectly balanced even all the way back.

This may be a particularly good chair if you’re tall -I’m 6’5″, almost two meters.

Check out Humanscale’s own website ([…]) for more info on its settings.”

Negative Review

Perrier: “The old pre 2014 ones are better made”

“The old ones are better and It’s not the same chair anymore. We had a few dozen of these chairs in the office and most people use to love them, however it seems the new ones are of lower quality ..

Too many of the components have changed

  1. The armrests are not as thick or as comfortable
  2. Armrest no-longer move sideways
  3. The foam on the seats are not as sturdy
  4. Many of the base components are now plastic, not metal
  5. The seat and head cushion cloth is of lower grade

They company now seems focused on trying to save a couple dollars on quality while still asking a premium price. Very disappointed in these guys.”

Mike: “Gas strut died, Gel arms failed, Seat padding failed. 15yr warranty seemingly worthless.”

“I am 5’10” 170lbs. I love the look of it and it was great when I got it but it hasn’t stood the test of time well at all. Gas strut died, Gel arms failed, Seat padding failed – see the pics – fabric has wrinkled badly. I had to go buy a $25 seat cushion for my $1,000 chair. I did give Humanscale a chance to correct it – but they asked me for a barcode thats supposed to be under the seat – I couldn’t find it – so they couldn’t help me – and that was that ! So less than impressed at their 15year warranty”
